What is Teen Read Week?

Teen Read Week promotes reading for pure enjoyment.  Highland will celebrate our Teen Read Week from January 14th - 18th.

This year’s theme, It's Written in the Stars, encourages teens to seek out fantasy, science fiction, and other out-of-this-world reads.

The library is hosting a variety of activities during this time.  Please check out some of the contests, events, and resources outlined below.

Be sure to drop by the library to look at the fiction and non-fiction book displays around this theme.

Teens' Top Ten

The Teens' Top Ten is a "teen choice" list, where teens nominate and choose their favourite books of the previous year!  Check out the annotated list and video, as well as the displays in the library.

Star Story Contest

Calling all writers!  Enter this year's contest by writing a short story that incorporates "stars" - science fiction, wilderness survival (e.g. star as a guide), star crossed lovers, movie-tv-YouTube stars, or any "star" related theme.

Prizes will be awarded to the top students at the Junior (Grade 8 and 9) and Senior (Grade 10-12) levels.  Please submit your work to the library by January 25th.

All You Can Read Buffet

On Thursday, January 17th, the Highland Library will be hosting an “All You Can Read Buffet”.  Participants are invited to come to Room 213 in their pajamas in the afternoon of Thursday, January 17th to read and munch on snacks.  You must have teacher permission to miss their class.

This is an excellent opportunity to get a break from your hectic schedule.  Space is limited so you need to get your permission form signed by your classroom teachers and returned to the library asap.  Please see Ms. Jerome in the library for more information.

Daily Trivia

Watch for the daily trivia question that tests your knowledge about teen fiction.  Prizes will be awarded to a student in each grade every day.

Escape from Dystopia Challenges

Some classes will participate in Escape from Dystopia, a Breakout box challenge where you’ve been transported to another world which is much darker than the one you are used to.  You will need to follow the clues, find your way out of the abandoned building, identify the factors that make this world different than yours, and save humanity from a bleak existence.
